On the second day of the design project, we were taken around some parts of London for further research. My group was assigned to visit Taryn Simon’s exhibition in Tate Modern and then slowly walked from the museum to the millenium bridge, Shakespeare’s Globe Theater, and finally to Borough Market while recording 50 drawings/photographs of similar things. I started out drawing the heads of things - buildings, lamp-posts, umbrellas. However, as I proceeded through the journey, I decided to just sketch whatever that strike out to me as I had to be quick on my feet and hands.

These are some photographs I took in Taryn Simon’s exhibition.

These series of photographs are of the children from a Ukrainian orphanage.

Unfortunately I only took a section of Taryn Simon’s exhibition. However, the format and layout of her works throughout the exhibition is similar to this one - the portraits of her subject, photographs of their environment/setting and a brief story about them. I find the layout of Taryn’s work very powerful. Its minimalist display forces the audience to study each of the individual portrait and makes one more curious and finding out the story behind these people. The portraits were also done very simply and humbly with a plain background and I think that this is done so that the viewer only focus on the expressions of each face, each pose, and the type of clothes that was worn by the individual.
